The author explains how, in updating christian social thinking in this, the centenary of the Rerum Novarum, the Pope has had to take into account the most diverse realities and hence to enter a global dimension. His encyclical once more proposes the social commitment of democracies as an alternative to total collectivism and old-fashioned liberalism. In the author's opinion it is lamentable that the Pope still fails to realise that a responsibile approach birth control must be assumed without delay.
