Abstract

The contribution of a 'lay philosophy'

The question is: what can a 'lay philosophy' contribute to the pursuit of bioethical principles. The paper proposes a different meaning of 'lay philosophy' in ethics to Scarpelli's: a philosophy against ethical principles which are, nonetheless, 'arbitrary principles', and a philosophy which seeks ethical principles that do not contrast with empirical knowledge and rational criticism. The article, in accordance with this general meta-ethical stance, traces a series of principles for a utilitarian approach to bioethical problems.
