Asian Giants / Taiwanese entrepreneurs in China and the management of the status quo in the Taiwan Strait
Mengin’s thesis is that today, as in the past under the Guomindang government, the political situation in Taiwanese policy cannot be analysed without taking Chinese dominance into account: yesterday, during the years of Chiang Kai-shek, the authoritarian government of Chinese nationalists over Taiwan; today the hegemonic irredentism of the PRC. On the basis of the definition given by international law, Taiwan is, without a shadow of doubt, a fully-fledged sovereign state, but in view of the fact that the Chinese civil war is still not over and of the delocalisation of Taiwanese businesses on the continent, island politics are constantly trapped in a dilemma: whether to give priority to national security with the risk of slowing down economic growth and, consequently, de facto independence, or to pursue economic growth to the detriment of security?
