Setting out from Luca Ricolfi and Paola Ferragutti’s analysis of electoral behaviour, Zanone reflects upon the Centre-Left’s capacity to respond to the ‘Northern question’, upon which he is convinced that the fortunes of the Prodi government, the coalition that supports it and the future Democrat Party depend directly. His thesis is that the Centre-Left can only win the challenge if it lays down its claims to a modernising role. To perform this role, it most go ahead with its policy of liberalisation, put an end to the malfunctioning of the state, invest in infrastructure, and weld the public and private sectors into an integrated system capable of presenting a competitive supply on global markets.
