The 'Special Relationship' between the UK and the US: Allies forever?
A common language and some shared history and culture apparently created natural political kinship between the UK and the USA. In fact, the so-called special Anglo-American relationship may have had a more important psychological impact on British leaders than on their American counterparts, and influenced or even distorted their outlook on the world and the rest of Europe. Its empirical resilience is striking in the military area, as British attitudes have increasingly leant towards political and economic ‘integration’ into Europe. This does not imply that both countries would be unconditional allies forever. This special relationship, though, entrusts the UK with a first-rank responsibility towards the future of political Europe and transatlantic relations.
