The present European situation – and, for specific reasons, the Italian situation in particular – is marked by a rejection of politics and a reawakening of interest for economic phenomena, the stock exchange first and foremost. The gap between the political and economic systems in terms of their promptness of response or, in other words, the speed of their decision-making, has also widened a great deal. National parliaments and European institutions have so far failed to translate the stimuli that come from abroad into positive precepts. As a result, the traditional tripartition of powers formulated by Montesquieu no longer has any correspondence in reality. It is thus necessary to adjust borderlines to update our vision of democracy, broadening the liberty of individuals, limiting state interference and defining the sphere of action and power of technocracies.
