According to the EU Economic Freedom Index elaborated by Centro Einaudi in collaboration with Corriere della Sera, Italy stands at fourteenth in the European Union, ahead only of Greece. It is a figure which scandalises liberalists, but studying the results of the survey more closely, it transpires that the lack of economic freedom here in Italy is only the syndrome of a more serious illness which affects the functioning of the two powers through which the economic process is substantiated: the executive and the legislative. According to the author, the centre of economic interests, social elaboration and political consensus has become the corporations, which defend their privileges with the same pressure capacity the trade unions adopt to defend a proletariat in danger of extinction. It is thus not, as liberalists argue, collectivist culture but, if anything, the fragmentation of the economic framework into small interest groups that is slowing down the modernisation of the country. It is the subjection of politics to the new social bloc, as was the case of big business and the unions in the past, that mortifies the market. Apparently, there is no way out.
