Global Economy and Recipes for Development / South Africa, or the Limits of Free Enterprise
Post-apartheid South Africa appears to be taking a gamble the outcome of which will determine its whole future: to make diversities – from ethnic groups and religions to animal and vegetable species – coexist, not only peacefully but also constructively each according to its own nature, productively in economic terms, and to unite them without forcing them to lose their individuality – just like the colours of the rainbow. The author feels that if South Africans can avoid a bloody clash between ethnic groups and economic stagnation or regression, promoting new forms of collaboration conducive to lasting change, reducing the imbalance in the distribution of income without traums and achieving an acceptable environmental equilibrium, then they will have come up with a ‘third way’, neither laisser-faire nor dirigiste, significant for the future of the entire planet – and not only in economic terms.
